The 5th Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta
September 25-26 & 29, 2009
Invitation / Entry Form
The Island Alliance takes pleasure in hosting the 5th Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta and invites all sailors, whether beginner or pro, to join in on the fun. In the world of sailing, there's no better event than a round-the-islands, benefit, pursuit race. In a pursuit race, everyone seems to be winning at some point. In this 12 mile race, the slowest rated boats start first and some of the fastest boats almost an hour later. With handicaps applied at the start, the theory is that in a perfect world everyone finishes at the same time.
What makes such an event even more fun is to have a party both before and afterwards.
Before the race on Friday evening, September 25, the skippers of each boat gather for a Captain's Meeting at the Boston Harbor Hotel Pavilion followed by a Pre-Race Cocktail Party at the Daily Catch to which everyone is invited.
New for this year after the race on Tuesday evening, September 29, there's a fun Post-Race Cocktail & Awards Party downtown at the Daily Catch with a raffle and some amazing Italian fare. This change from having the cookout immediately after racing is due to construction on Georges Island. We may even discover that it works out better for the racing. (1) The Race Committee won't be pressured to finish all boats by 2:30 PM in order to get people onto the island and off before sunset - meaning they can wait longer for wind to fill in for the start or let the race run longer without having to shorten the race too early. (2) If we face nasty weather on Saturday (remember 2008), it's easier to have Sunday in the schedule as a "make-up" day.
Boston is lucky to have the Boston Harbor Islands national park area in its back yard. Your participation in this race helps Island Alliance in one of its most worthwhile missions, to have every inner city school child experience the joys of discovering the beauty, and being part, of nature and the sea.
