May 2010

Greetings Sailors!

The 2010 sailing season is almost here. I can feel the warmth of the sun and smell the varnish in the yards.

Boston Harbor Island Alliance hopes you’ve put our 6th Annual Regatta on your calendars. Opening festivities kick off on Friday evening, September 24 at 6 PM with a Captain’s Meeting at the Pavilion of the Boston Harbor Hotel, immediately followed by a Cocktail Reception at the Daily Catch.

The 2010 Regatta will be held Saturday, September 25th with a weather make-up day of Sunday (9/26). As in 2009, the Awards Party will be hosted the following Tuesday, at 6 PM. Other than the Captain’s Meeting, all events are open to all crew, friends and family.

All sailors, from beginner to pro, are invited to participate in this fun-filled pursuit race, round-the-islands. There are trophies for the top woman, master (age 65+), all-family crew, one-design finisher if 3 or more boats, best community boating club and top yacht club. There are also prizes for the top 3 boats in each of 7 divisions of non-spinnaker and spinnaker entries, grouped by rating as well as the overall finishers. All in all, 46 trophies were handed out in 2009. That’s almost one for every two boats entered. Just about everybody’s a winner!

This is really fun racing. In a pursuit race, boats are handicapped at the start with the slowest rated boat starting first and generally leading the fleet for most of the race. The theory is that everyone finishes at the same time, which makes for an exciting race to watch from the ramparts of Ft. Warren. With a pair of binoculars one can see practically the entire figure-8 course with the Fort at the crossover point. As always, family-friendly activities will be available on Georges Island all day long.

Stay tuned for 2010 announcement and news on the event website at www.bostonharborislandsregatta.com. We look forward to seeing you in September. A day in the park has never been such fun.

In the meantime, enjoy some picnics this summer sailing amongst these beautiful islands, or stop by for one of the 50 Free Events, enjoy a Summer Shack lobster clambake, or just take in the views.

Fair breezes!
