BLACK SEAL WINS MAYOR'S CUP IN BOSTON HARBOR ISLANDS REGATTA
Boston - Sep 25 Hingham resident, Jeff Kent, sailing with his wife and friend sailed the J/35 BLACK SEAL to a 4:08 win over Ralph DiMattia's NM 40 SHAMROCK SENSATION in the non-spinnaker fleet to win the Mayor's Cup for top performance in the 6th running of the Boston Harbor Islands Regatta. Kent was the runner-up overall in the spinnaker fleet last year. 98 boats were registered. Chris Zibailo in his J/109 SUPERSTITION was the winner of the spinnaker fleet by only 2 feet to nip Barry Bessette's well-sailed S2 7.9 CLUB CAR from the Hyannis YC. BLACK SEAL and SUPERSTITION won the Beal Consulting Group Trophies for overall victories in each Fleet, shared the J Boats Trophy for the best performing J Boat in the regatta and also won the Capt Pratt Trophy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy Memorial Trophy for winning their respective Classes.
Entry fees and donations help Boston Harbor Island Alliance in one of its most worthwhile missions, to provide all residents and tourists, especially those from underserved communities, experience the joys of discovering the beauty, and being part, of nature and the sea in this unique National Park of the Boston Harbor Islands.
The day lived up to the forecast with variable, mostly moderate, Southwesterly breezes and sunny skies. Regatta Director, Bob Johnstone, sent the two fleets off on Course 1, a figure of 8, starting just west of Georges Island with a clockwise loop out the Narrows, through Hypocrite Channel around Outer Brewster Island and Boston Light. The fleet made quite a sight tacking up Nantasket Roads in a favorable flood current. Rainsford Island was then rounded to port with the finish back at the start point.
Winner of bragging rights among yacht clubs for the year, winning the prestigeous EOEA Secretary's Yacht Club Challenge was the Constitution Yacht Club for the second year in a row with an entirely new team. SUPERSITION, SHAMROCK SENSATION and Bill Jacobsen's J/46 VANISH, runner-up in Class A. The President's Bowl honoring the top City Sailing Club went to the Courageous Sailing Club team with Miguel Conti's Mirage 338 BANTRY and a pair of J/22's sailed by Ed Marcus and Jesse Hamilton.
Top female skipper in Fleet 1 was Elizabeth Lamb in the Aphrodite 101 AVERISERA, who won The Daily Catch Cup and Linda Hosking from the Boston YC in Marblehead at the helm of the C&C 40 ARES to win the Davis Bowl.
The top master, 65 or older, in Fleet 1 for the Windward Investment Trophy was Chet Osborn in his Melges 24 ROLLING STONE, while in Fleet 2 for the Fan Pier Trophy it was Ralph DiMattia. The Burnes Family Bowl for the top Classic yacht built before 1970 went to Elaine Webb's beautiful Alden yawl SANDRALA. Best performance by an all-family crew in the event, winning the Gelb Family Trophy was the Graul Family in their Sabre 36 SUMMERIN'.
Bob Cunningham in his J/30 RUFFIAN was leading the spinnaker fleet around the last mark onto the last leg, but had to settle for winning Class B for the Beal Trophy a very close 4th overall. Class C Winner was Barry Bessette's CLUB CAR for the Barbara Lee Foundation Bowl and E winner for the Sperry Topsider Trophy was Richard Tubman's O'Day 31 CHARISMA. Class F was won by Ralph Vinciguerra in his Pearson Vanguard BLUE ANGEL and Class G of Sailing Club boats, was won by Ed Marcus in a J/22 from Courageous.
One-Design Trophies were handed out to the top boat of any design with 3 or more competing. This year there were 4 one-designs with Ed Marcus winning the J/22s, Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz the Solings, Sean Kane in CHIKANERY winning the Thunderbirds and Dave Winkler from SeaTow Boston winning the Catalina 30 class in IPHIGENIA.
